I just want to point out that spaying and neutering pets has been considered ethical for a long time now, its not a new thing. This is particularly true in countries such as Australia where allowing cats and dogs to be free to breed has lead to growth in wild populations that has decimated native wildlife. I don't agree with a lot of PETA's policies but this one actually has some sense.

Well, I disagree. I just can't see anything ethical in castrating an animal. It's just convenient thing to do for the pet owners and very convenient thing for pet breeders.

Spaying and neutering is not the same thing as castrating. When you see the abundance of abandoned animals around starving and sick, I don't see how that could be considered a better choice (just because it's cheaper) than getting your pets fixed so they don't have more babies than the household can take care of. Of course the other option is to kill the unwanted puppies and kittens. That is much more humane than having an operation done to pets.

"very convenient thing for pet breeders" How would spaying and neutering be convenient for 'pet breeders'?? Um a pet can't breed after they have been spayed and neutered. Pet breeders would not want to neuter their pets. They would want to breed as many as possible to make more money.

Less unwanted puppies means more money for pet breeders. It's just a supply and demand thing the way I see it. I bet PETA gets big donations from pet breeders for promoting spaying and neutering.

I guess you aren't aware of all the animals that are ditched in the countryside, or at the side of the highway, because people didn't want to get their pets spayed or neutered, but couldn't afford to take care of the litters of puppies and kittens that they had. Yes, tossing the animals you can't take care of to be squashed on the highway or starve to death is much more humane than getting them fixed. Are you in favor of people having as many kids as they possibly can whether they can take care of them or not? Well, they don't have a 'just say no' abstinance campaign for animals or kitty condoms, or a morning after pill for pets so the animals will pump out as many babies as is possible even if it means the owners need to smash their heads in with a rock afterward. My neighbors had several cats that they just abandoned when they moved out. Those cats had litters of kittens, all of which are now left to fend for themselves. Many have been dug out of the crawlspaces under peoples houses where they crawled and starved or froze to death. It's a good thing their owners were to 'humane' to get their tubes tied.

And while I also don't agree with most of petas beliefs (they are way too extreme) they do also protest against the puppy mills (ie pet breeders) and encourage people to not buy from them and to instead adopt from the animal shelters, so I would say it is not likely that they are in the pet breeders pockets. If they are I think they will want their money back when the protest them.
