The movie is set in 1609 in a small fishing village in Basque Country in which a group of traveling inquisitors conduct a witch trial for six teenage girls accused of participating in Witches' Sabbath.
The movie made me want to read up more about the actual witch trails. I realized it was a mistake once they started describing torture techniques used by inquisitors to elicit confessions from people accused of their wrongdoings. Methods, so horrifying, that made other priests witnessing this trails, realize that torture has the power to create witches where none exist, as was the case with Jesuit priest Friedrich Spee, theologian Adam Tanner, catholic priest Cornelius Loos...
